Hi, my name is Garritt and this is me and my girlfriend, Mer-Mer.
Around 8th grade, frustrated that her mom could not mend her clothes fast enough, Mer-Mer started to sew. She stuck with clothes for a while. Then, last summer, her grandma told her that she should make a quilt out of her old soccer shirts. The shirts were old, worn and slightly-stained, and both Mer-Mer’s mom and grandma wanted her to stop wearing them. According to Mer-Mer, “They were both like, ‘Rarrrrr…'”
So Mer-Mer went to the library and checked-out an armful of books about quilting and started to make a crazy quilt. Being ADHD as she is, she put that project on the back-burner and began another one that, in her words and others’, “Is completely awesome!” It was a chess-set for me. She also made cuddle pillows, a bracelet and a wallet and learned how to embroider. It was official, she had an addiction.
At school, Mer-Mer can usually be found sewing on a couch in her dormitory’s common room, using the couch cushions as pincushions. She sews non-stop, making presents for friends and family using any scrap of fabric she can find.
This blog was created as part of a class assignment but was inspired by Mer-Mer. I find her projects fun, completely random and unbelievably creative. I hope you do too.
If you would like to contact Mer-Mer about any of her projects or if you’d be interested in having her make a project for you, email us at sewingwithmermer@yahoo.com.
Raarrrr…That’s what Mommy’s going to do to me this weekend. I have a feeling. Nom.
